Description of the article « Saga de Xam »
Saga de Xam is one of the last forgotten nuggets of 1960s global comics. At the time, Éric Losfeld, a historic counterculture publisher, decided to publish a few comic strips. Masterpieces such as Jean-Claude Forest's Barbarella and Pravda la survireuse were published by Losfeld. And Saga de Xam, a Dantesque and unique work by its author, Nicolas Devil, based on a screenplay by the legendary filmmaker Jean Rollin. Unquestionably, Saga de Xam is a milestone in the history of French-language comics, particularly in terms of science fiction and heroic fantasy. Its plastic power has never been equalled.
In 1967, Nicolas Devil (1943), a young artist of 24, produced his only comic book, Saga de Xam. He soon withdrew from the world of comics, discouraged by the difficulties and compromises involved. As for Jean Rollin (1938-2010), his co-writer, he continued a long career as a filmmaker, making 25 films under his own name and another twenty or so under various pseudonyms. He also wrote over twenty novels and short stories.
